The classic Google Finance view, and how to get it back

The short version: the classic Google Finance view no longer exists on google.com. Google removed the last “switch to classic” toggle on July 23, 2026, when Google Finance left beta, and the change happened on Google’s servers — no browser setting undoes it. What happened to the classic view

Google started testing an AI-powered redesign of Finance in the United States in August 2025. For almost a year the new page shipped with an escape hatch — a link that put you back on the classic layout. In April 2026 the redesign rolled out to more than a hundred countries, escape hatch still intact. Then on July 23, 2026, Google Finance exited beta, and the toggle went with it. Since that morning, the AI-first page is the only version Google serves, in every country and on every account.

Because the switch is server-side, what you see is not a preference stored in your browser. There is nothing to clear, reset, or toggle. Searching your settings for a “classic mode” will come up empty, because none exists anymore.

Do any workarounds work?

No. We tested every trick circulating on forums since July 23 — old URLs like google.com/finance?classic, clearing cookies, going incognito, switching countries with a VPN, restyling extensions, even the Wayback Machine — and they all dead-end at the new page. The classic front-end is gone from Google’s servers, so there is nothing left for a trick to reach. The full results are in our method-by-method write-up.

What the classic page did better

The complaints about the redesign are consistent, and they are not nostalgia. Specific capabilities disappeared:

• The dense statistics table — open, high, low, market cap, P/E, dividend yield — readable in one glance instead of spread across cards.
• Point and dollar changes shown beside the percentages — the redesign shows percent alone.
• The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq strip across the top of every page.
• Portfolios you could sort by holding value, day’s gain, or total gain.
• The heat map that showed every holding at a glance — the redesign’s version, under Insights, plots only some of them.
• Tabbed watchlists — holdings, tickers you were watching, exchange rates — each one click apart.
• Detailed transaction history you could review and correct, including buys and sells entered by hand at an edited price.
• Per-purchase returns: every lot tracked from its buy date, in dollars and percent.
• Charts with long usable history that switched ranges instantly.
• Data first, not last: the redesign parks AI summaries above the numbers you came for.

Will Google bring it back?

Unlikely. A petition on Change.org asking Google to restore the classic version — or at least its key functionality — passed 400 signatures within its first week, and threads across Reddit and Google’s own support forum say the same thing in blunter words. The hopeful point to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, which public pressure pushed into walking back parts of its widely hated 2025 website redesign — but a public agency answers to the taxpayers who fund it. Google has not responded at all, and its track record with retired designs points one way: once a replacement ships to everyone, the old version does not return. Waiting for the toggle to reappear is not a plan. Getting the same page back from someone who rebuilt it is.
